Christina Carter was born in Houston, Texas, the Bayou City, which feels appropriate, because her music has been flowing, winding, and occasionally flooding its banks ever since. In December 1991, she co-founded the pioneering avant-garde group Charalambides, and she hasn’t really stopped exploring sound since. Voice, guitar, piano—she’s worked them all into her personal language of “sound-as-music". And as of 2025, she’s added accordion to the conversation.
Along the way, Christina has toured widely across Canada, Mexico, the United States, the UK, and Europe, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with an impressive list of fellow explorers. These include Jeffrey Alexander, Bardo Pond, Lisa Cameron, Maria Chavez, Loren Connors, Chris Corsano, Spencer Dobbs, Ryan Edwards, Sandy Ewen, Paul Flaherty, M. Geddes Gengras, Julia Hungerford, Allie Lingren, Joe McPhee, David Menestres, Thurston Moore, more eaze, Justin Rodriguez-Jones, and Yellow Swans.
Her latest releases include the solo album Like A Bayou To Its Gulf (Bud Tapes) and Obscuress – Maltha, a collaboration with Spencer Dobbs (Unifactor). Coming next is Extraire on Regional Bears (UK), which marks her first extended dive into the accordion as a foundational instrument—supporting vocals that drift between the wordless and the slyly, beautifully askew.
